THE EDGE’S NEWSPAPER-IN-EDUCATION (NIE) PROGRAMME

NIE is a programme that uses newspapers as an additional tool and an invaluable classroom resource to provide motivation for reading and discussion so as to bridge the gap between the classroom and the “real” world. Since newspapers present current situations, they can be used by teachers to enhance their lessons and stimulate critical thinking. At the same time, they also encourage learners to search for new interests and continue exploring different issues. As an effective supplementary resource for teaching and learning, NIE makes it easier to make lessons pleasant, interactive, and fun. Sad to say, newspapers are an under-utilised resource that, if used consistently and creatively, can contribute to the development of 21st century learning and thinking skills.
Amongst the benefits of the NIE program are:
·         It offers activities that develop research skills – students use elements such as pictures, articles   and advertisements in The Edge to learn the language in an authentic setting.
·         It encourages students to be creative and analytical.
·         It allows students to widen their grammar and vocabulary usage.
·         It develops students' general knowledge through current issues
·         It provides a platform for group work and peer learning while training students to become   effective team players.

In order to develop a useful, innovative and dynamic educational support system, SMK Bangsar places strong emphasis on the NIE Programme to improve English proficiency amongst the students. Through the use of strategies to develop higher order thinking skills and plan for cross-curricular projects that extend learning beyond the classroom, students are able to develop a critical, open, and participative spirit as well as a more positive attitude towards learning. Here, we would like to take the opportunity to thank The Edge Education Foundation for sponsoring copies of The Edge Malaysia to us on a regular basis.

The photos below, which were taken during my English lessons, clearly show that an NIE lesson can turn out to be very interesting and meaningful and our students are enjoying every moment of it.
